Creative Coding with Philip Thompson

Short Course
Micro:Bit circuit board
Short Course & Professional Development

This workshop is an introduction to BBC micro:bit; a small computer that supports creativity using digital technology. The micro:bit was initially created as part of the BBC鈥檚 Make it Digital initiative that launched in 2014, aimed to stimulate creativity using programming and digital technology as a medium. The project supported STEM related learning.

Mode of Study

  • On Campus

Mode of Attendance

  • Part Time

Start Date

TBC

Course Length

2 days - Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 - 16:00

During this two-day workshop participants are provided the opportunity to explore all the onboard components of the BBC micro: bit. This will involve experimentation with movement, lighting, and temperature sensors. Participants will be introduced to computer programming and will be taught how to programme a micro:bit using an online, learn to code platform called Microsoft Make Code. Participants will be taught basic Make Code functions, this will involve: start, forever loop, and button A/B pressed. Using this software participants will be taught how to create simple animations.

In addition, the use of Bluetooth will also be incorporated into the workshop whereby participants will be taught how to use wireless technology to enable communications between two separate micro:bits.

Throughout the weekend, participants can expect to build knowledge and understanding of programming concepts, electronics and sensors. Participants will begin to learn about the capabilities of this small computer and the possible outcomes which stem from its input and output functions. This presents an opportunity for participants to create interactive art using digital technology.

Each participant will be provided with their own micro:bit v2 at the start of the workshop.

Please bring your own laptop to connect to your micro:bit. This will require a USB connection.

Participants are encouraged to download the required software prior to joining the workshop:

  • Microsoft Make Code
  • JavaScript
  • Python

Don't forget to bring your laptop charger.

An Apple iMac computer can be provided should participants not be able to bring their own laptop.
