Coirilidh Cook has managed to successfully balance her athletics training and cheer leading with her studies and graduating with from ǰα with first-class honours.

The 21-year-old from Glasgow has completed BA (Hons) Events Management and has crossed a significant finish line as she looks ahead to living abroad in the next part of her journey.

Coirilidh was drawn to the course due to its practical nature which involved organising events, meeting with industry professionals and gaining important experience.

One of her highlights was a semester in Austria alongside her classmates, and Coirilidh feels it helped her grow as a person and added to her overall ǰα experience. Coirilidh is looking to the future and feels her time at the University has stood in good stead for moving into industry.

She said: “My time in Austria really shaped me as a person. I grew tremendously in confidence and fell in love with the city and its culture,” she shares. “It gave me a whole new perspective and helped break up the four years in a way that made my university experience even more enriching.”

“I feel that ǰα has done an exceptional job with preparing me for my next step as the entire experience has been so industry and experience driven, with emphasis on gaining as much experience as possible and meeting as many people as possible. This has given me a really realistic outlook on what industry is looking for and has encouraged me to volunteer and get involved with events however I can.”

She was also busy competing on the athletics track throughout her four years of study, which involved five training sessions a week. In her fourth year at ǰα she joined the cheer team, an experience which meant she travelled as far as The Midlands for competitions

Coirilidh said having these commitments on top of her studies helped her managed her time and gave her plenty of positive experiences

She added: “I have been a competitive athlete for both and Aberdeen Amateur Athletic Club throughout all four years of my time at university. This has meant I have had training five days a week at Aberdeen Sports Village as well as competitions. This is something I have had to carefully manage on top of my studies and social life, as both are a priority to me.

“Finally, in fourth year I decided I wanted to take on a team sport as it was my last chance to do so at university, so I joined the . This meant an additional two training sessions a week on top of competitions as far away as Birmingham. This definitely brought its challenges with juggling 7 total training sessions a week (athletics and cheer) but ultimately, I managed this well and had an incredible experience with the team. I made a lot of new friends and had so many fun experiences with the team.”

At the moment, Coirilidh is working to save money for a summer internship with an events company in London to work at the Creamfields Festival, then she is planning on moving to Australia before returning to the UK to land a full-time events job.
