Katie Thomson – PgDip Diploma in Professional Legal Practice
The 21-year-old from Mintlaw had already completed the LLB (Hons) Law course before deciding to stay on to complete the postgraduate qualification.
Katie revealed that a conversation with her Mum inspired her to opt for a legal career, and following the completion of her studies she has secured a job as a Paralegal in Aberdeen.
She said that one of the main draws of the courses was that they both lead to a recognised professional qualification.
Katie said: “What attracted me to the LLB (Hons) and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice was the clear pathway it provides to qualifying as a solicitor.
“The Diploma in Professional Legal Practice transferred the legal knowledge I gained in my LLB to scenarios faced by solicitors in day-to-day practice. It is a great bridge between legal theory and legal application. Completing this course has enabled me to feel more comfortable and prepared in beginning work in the legal field. Since I have begun working as a Paralegal, I have been able to apply the things I learnt during the Diploma.â€
Katie started her undergraduate studies during the pandemic, which made it difficult to secure vital work experience, but she said ÍøºìǰÈα¬ÁÏ’s Grampian Community Law Centre was important for her gaining important experience.
Katie said: “I believe the Grampian Community Law Centre was a great way to access legal experience within the university. The service provides free legal advice to members of the local community who cannot access legal services elsewhere. I was involved in a wide variety of cases which also helped me develop practical skills.â€
“Contributing to the community through this work was incredibly rewarding, as it allowed me to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals who truly needed support.â€
Having secured a job as a Paralegal, Katie has set her sights on progressing into a traineeship as she continues her journey in the legal sector. Katie said: “I have felt welcomed by everyone. I am comfortable seeking help when needed and never feel embarrassed about asking questions and admitting when I do not understand. It is reassuring to know that I am not expected to know everything at this stage, and the support I have received has been both encouraging and invaluable as I continue my employment.â€
Katie added: “ÍøºìǰÈα¬ÁÏ is local to where I am from, and as I was only sixteen when I began university I wanted to go somewhere that I felt comfortable and still close to home. As the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice is a student funded course, the discount which is offered by ÍøºìǰÈα¬ÁÏ for postgrad continuation is a huge help, if this discount was not available, I do not believe I would have been able to continue studying and take the next step in my legal career.â€
